On May 10, 1873, Damien arrived at the secluded settlement at Kalaupapa. Bishop Louis Maigret, ss.cc. presented Damien to the colonists as "one who will be a father to you, and who loves you so much that he does not hesitate to become one of you; to live and die with you." The settlement was surrounded by an impregnable mountain ridge. There were 600 lepers living at Kalaupapa. His first action was to build a church and establish the Parish of St. Philomena so the lepers may worship. After fifteen+ years of ministry on Molokai, Father Damien was bedridden on March 23, 1889, and on March 30 he made a general confession and renewed his vows. On April 1, he received Holy Viaticum and on April 2, Extreme Unction. Father Damien died of leprosy at 8:00 am on April 15, 1889, aged 49. The next day, after Mass by Father Moellers at St. Philomena’s, the whole settlement followed the funeral cortège to the cemetery where Damien was laid to rest under the same Pandanus tree where he first slept upon his arrival on Molokai. In January 1936, at the request of the Belgian government, Damien's body was returned to his native land. It was brought back aboard the Belgian sailing ship “Mercator” and now rests in the Sint-Antonius Church of the Sacred Heart in Leuven, Belgium an historic university city close to the village where Damien was born. In June 1995, the remains of his right hand were returned to Hawaii, and re-interred in his original grave on Molokai.

Tous les ans le 13 août dans l'Eglise St Antoine de Padoue de Pasarét, une messe est célébrée en l'honneur de Notre-Dame de Fatima et de Sainte Philomène en présence de sa relique. Un tableau original de Masa Feszty représentant la Sainte est accroché dans un couloir du couvent franciscain voisin. Il n'est placé à côté de l'autel que pendant cette messe.
Székesfehérvàr; Eglise Saint-Sébastian ; tableau (reproduction de l'oeuvre de la peintre hongroise Masa FESZTY datant de l'année 1961 se trouvant au Sanctuaire de Mugnano) intronisé à l'Eglise St Sébastian de Székesfehérvàr en juin 2010. Sur la photo ci-dessus, le tableau est posé sur l'autel du milieu. Depuis, un groupe de prière de Sainte Philomène fonctionne avec les rencontres mensuelles.

It was the property of Dr. Radcliffe, physician and M.P.and after his death was bought by Sir John Fellowes, a director of the South Sea Company. It was confiscated after the South Sea catastrophe in 1721, although Fellowes still continued to reside in Carshalton. It subsequently came into the possession of Lord Chancellor Hardwick, was afterwards used as a military college, and from 1859 to 1893 as a private school, kept by Mr. Bath and Dr. Barrett, who added a wing containing a dormitory. In 1893 it was taken over by the Daughters of the Cross, a Roman Catholic body founded in Liége in 1833. They built further additions to the west of the old building, and now carry on the educational work of the convent of St. Philomena, the name by which the house is known. In spite of its many different occupants the house itself has been little disturbed and stands to-day in practically the same condition as when erected. "
